Premier League teams decide to outlaw gambling sponsorship on the front of shirts.

Despite being one of the most profitable choices for Premier League teams outside of the big six (Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool), the clubs voted, and the result saw the league abolish gambling sponsorship.

It is believed that because it was anticipated that the clubs would vote individually to forbid the sponsorship, the upcoming White Paper on Gambling would not specifically call for a ban on gambling advertising in the Premier League.

The value of the sponsorship from gambling businesses is estimated to be £52 million ($65 million), and the Premier League's lesser clubs' loss of money could further widen the gap between the big six and the remaining 14 clubs.

Christian Purslow, the CEO of Aston Villa, addressed the issue and stated: "The commercial reality is that such sponsors offer clubs twice as much financially as non-gambling companies to teams outside the top six."

The choice was made shortly after the Premier League ownership White Paper study concluded, recommending a number of modifications to the current structure of English football's top division.

The Premier League clubs have three years to agree on new contracts and let their present ones expire, which is longer than some had anticipated and has drawn criticism from some quarters.

Gambling companies may continue to place advertisements on the sleeves of team shirts even though the restriction does not apply to the FoS.
